Demeter Counts on One Hand What She Knows

Thin seedlings emerge from the earth.

Finally the light comes dawdling back.

In every lake’s slow thaw I’m the song.

Perennials’ roots reach down deep.

I’m the reason buds begin as fists.
Jennifer Richter is the author of the poetry collections Threshold (2010) and No Acute Distress (2016), both Crab Orchard Series Selections and Oregon Book Award Finalists. Her work has appeared in ZYZZYVA, The Massachusetts Review, The Los Angeles Review, Prairie Schooner, Poetry, Ploughshares, The Missouri Review, CALYX, Poetry Northwest, and  more. She teaches in Oregon State University's MFA program.
